Westerly Rhode Island

There is currently no Shore Line East train service to Westerly, Rhode Island. The Connecticut Department of Transportation studied extending service east of New London, but as of the 2023 draft report there are no funded plans to proceed.

The Eastern CT Corridor Rail and Transit Feasibility Study looked at extending rail service with four possible new stations: Groton, Mystic, and Stonington in Connecticut, and Westerly in Rhode Island.

The study identified potential benefits (more ridership, regional economic growth, and more travel options) and significant challenges (an estimated cost of about $1 billion for two new routes, and limits from the century-old Thames River bridge).

As of now the extension is unfunded, with no immediate plans. The 2023 draft report was released for public comment, and all proposals are subject to change based on further analysis and funding. Study findings are on the CTDOT site at portal.ct.gov.
