This explains how the departure boards and audio announcements work at New Haven Union Station and New Haven State Street Station, which serve both the Hartford Line and Shore Line East. Always confirm your train with the Trip Planner, and listen for platform announcements close to departure.
The boards and announcements at both stations are managed by Metro-North.
- A track assignment appears on the boards only within 30 minutes of departure. If no track is shown, the train is more than 30 minutes away.
- At New Haven Union, a track can be assigned as late as 5 minutes before departure, and that can change the track shown at State Street. If you board at State Street, watch the board closely in the 10 minutes before your train.
- Announcements at New Haven Union begin 10 minutes before departure and repeat every 2 minutes until the train leaves; track-change announcements follow the same timing.
- If a train is delayed, the boards and announcements may briefly show the original scheduled time until they are updated, so listen for announcements.
Boarding at New Haven: you can board 5 to 10 minutes before departure, once the conductor is present. Crews use the time before that for brake tests and safety checks. In the early morning, two Shore Line East trains may already be positioned on the platform, so check with the crew which train is leaving first to be sure you are not waiting at the wrong one.
